Portfolio Post #2:
Defining "The Media" vs. "The Press"
A common misconception is treating "the media" and "the press" as interchangeable terms. While the press refers specifically to journalism and structured news organizations responsible for investigative reporting, the media encompasses a far broader landscape, including social platforms, advertisements, podcasts, entertainment, and individual influencers.
In my discussion post, I defined the media as the overall collection of channels used to communicate information, entertainment, and opinions to large audiences. I pointed out how platforms like Instagram and TikTok deliver news passively into our feeds, blurring the lines between pure entertainment and current events.
My classmate Kamryn Wilson echoed a similar perspective, pointing out how TikTok has become a primary everyday news source for younger audiences. Kamryn highlighted data from the Pew Research Center showing that 53% of U.S. adults receive news from social media at least occasionally.
Top 3 Media Challenges
Based on our group discussions, three key issues stood out as the most concerning in today's digital landscape:
1. Rapid Misinformation: Kamryn referenced research from the American Psychological Association on how quickly false claims spread online. Without editorial oversight, incorrect information often travels faster than fact-checked news.
2. Algorithmic Influence: Platforms prioritize engagement over accuracy. Because algorithms present news passively while we scroll, users frequently consume biased or unverified opinion content without realizing it.
3. Unrealistic Societal Standards: Social media significantly impacts daily culture—shaping trends, beauty standards, and lifestyle expectations that rarely reflect reality.
Understanding these dynamics is important to me because social media is an unavoidable part of my daily routine. Realizing how easily algorithms can shape my perspective forces me to be a more intentional consumer. Moving forward, I want to ensure I check sources against independent research, separate fact from opinion, and remain aware of how digital content influences my real-world mindset.
